Borra de Café: Arte e Ciência em Ação

Coffee Grounds: Art and Science in Action

Have you ever imagined turning coffee grounds into paint for creating works of art?

This experiment was carried out with my nine-year-old son Arthur, who enjoys exploring creative possibilities and natural materials.

Uses of coffee grounds

Coffee grounds can be reused as natural dye, plant fertiliser, pest repellent, skin exfoliant, odour absorber, animal repellent and a natural cleaner for kitchen utensils.

Coffee grounds as a natural dye

We heated the grounds for 10 minutes, filtered them and divided them into four containers: pure coffee grounds, coffee grounds with guar gum, with iron and with alum. Each additive changed the texture, colour, intensity or durability of the paint.

The pure grounds produced soft earthy tones that became pale over time. Guar gum made the paint thicker but the colour almost disappeared after drying. Iron produced a beautiful dark grey tone. Alum made the colour brighter and more lasting on paper.

Arthur used the paints to create his own drawing and we also experimented with several layers and plant material. This experience helped us understand the properties of the materials and how they can be used in innovative ways.

Conclusion

Turning coffee grounds into paint was an enriching experience that stimulated our imagination. It is a fun and educational activity to try at home, allowing you to create meaningful art and share a special moment with your family.
