Escolha das Fibras

Choosing Fibres

Not all fibres react to natural dyes in the same way. Natural fibres are the best candidates because they have greater chemical affinity with colours extracted from nature. Cotton is widely available and relatively easy to dye, absorbing colour well; linen also dyes well but may require more preparation; silk captures colour brightly and intensely; and animal fibres such as wool absorb dyes well and produce rich, deep colours.

Preparing the fibres

Proper preparation is essential for dye adhesion and colour durability. Before dyeing, wash the fibres to remove dirt, natural oils and production residues. Use a neutral detergent and avoid fabric softener, which can prevent dye absorption. I prefer hand washing and usually soak the fabric for at least 24 hours with detergent, washing soda crystals or ash water, sometimes changing the water and repeating the process.

Natural dyeing requires patience and care, but the results are rewarding. By preparing the fibres correctly and choosing the right materials, it is possible to obtain vivid, long-lasting colours that reflect nature’s beauty and diversity. Now it is your turn to experiment and discover the possibilities of natural dyeing.
