Printing with Mordants

A different way to explore natural dyes. In this workshop, you will discover how to create different formulas and patterns, exploring several shades to obtain different intensities, contrasts and effects from plant colours.

I want to continue learning — 4h

Discover the principle of mordant printing and experiment with how different concentrations influence the final result. Using several solutions, you will create two samples with different concentrations and explore printing with stamps, brushes, stencils and tools made from simple materials.

You will learn to understand the role of mordants, prepare and calculate concentrations, create your own tools, control the gesture and amount applied, develop compositions, follow the stages of the process, observe colour transformation during dyeing and compare results. At the end, you take home your final creation and a practical guide.

I want to gain my autonomy — 2 days

Two days to understand the relationship between mordant, concentration, colour and printing, moving from systematic experimentation to creating your own patterns.

Day one is dedicated to testing: preparing mordant solutions and concentrations, building a comparative sampler, identifying samples and recording formulas. Day two moves from experimentation to creation: using the sampler as a reference, choosing concentrations, working with stamps, brushes, stencils and personal tools, and exploring repetition, layering, rhythm and composition.

You will learn to formulate, compare and document results, choose concentrations, create printing tools and develop patterns intentionally. At the end, you take home a sampler, a test grid, a textile creation, a practical guide and a method for continuing to experiment independently.
